Ferrara At Procida Summer Camp

Ciro Ferrara spent a day with the children subscribed to the Summer Camp in Procida. The coach is enjoying the last few days of his holidays prior to the imminent return to sporting activities on the 9th of July.

In confirmation of the union of the Juventus technical staff accompanying the coach were his collaborators Massimiliano Maddaloni and Dood Sormani who descended on the field to train the 90 boys subscribed. The boys were rewarded with autographs and photos at the end of the session.

This is an example of the surprises which the children (8 to 16 years of age) subscribed to the Summer Camps organized by the Juventus Soccer Schools can expect. The project which has been doing extremely well since the Summer of 2004 when it was launched in Bardonecchia as the only location has been expanded to other tourist localities like Procida in Campania, Roncegno Terme and Madonna di Campiglio in Trentino, San Marino in the Republic of San Marino and Horsham in England in which last locality English is also part of the training.

Lega Calcio 2009/10 Ball Presented

The first official matches are still quite far, however today a fundamental element was presented: the new ball which will be used in all the competitions organized by the Lega Calcio, that is the Serie A and B championships, the Coppa Italia Tim Cup, The Italian Super Cup and the Primavera championship.

Just like in the last few seasons, since Lega Calcio chose to use one unique ball, Nike will be providing the new model. It is the “Nike Total 90 Ascente”, is red and silver in colour and was officially presented this morning.

Amongst the many champions who have already had the occasion to test it and leave their comments is Claudio Marchisio. The Juventus midfielder had this to say: "The external material of which it is made guarantees ball control".

Buffon: "See You In Pinzolo"

While the majority of the squad has begun its countdown to the return to the field, those players who were busy with international competitions have just begun their holidays.

With the Confederations Cup and the Under 21 European Championship having come to an end, the return dates are now definite. The azzurri who were in South Africa will be in Pinzolo on the 16th of July whilst the youngsters will arrive on the 18th of July with the exception of Giovinco who will be undergoing an operation on Wednesday and which will delay his return by a few days.

It is holiday time for all then, a time to rest and recover after months of activities. Amongst these is Gigi Buffon. The number one spoke of his current state of mind on his own website www.gianluigibuffon.com. He also took the opportunity to speak about the adventure in South Africa but also to start thinking of the upcoming appointments:

"I will be at the Summer camp in Pinzolo on the 16th of July, together with my mates who were with me with the national team. We will begin the new season with the intention of doing well, knowing that a long road awaits us full of ambitious goals. We have the right cards to do well and it is up to us to confirm the expectations. We hope to be able to play in a more balanced championship then the last and to be able to close up on the gap which separated us from Inter".

Before thinking in bianconero and even before getting back to his holidays, Buffon had another glance at the Confederations Cup which ended with Brazil claiming the cup.

"Our adventure ended early but we must try to look at the positive side. It is better to have done badly now then at the World Championships or in the European Cup. We went to play in the tournament in a condition which was far from excellent, we were at 60% of our condition".

"This type of competition is useful to test the squad and identify the errors which one must nit commit in view of the 2010 World Cup. Next year we will be at our top and the group will be ready. The doors to the national team are open and Lippi knows he can count on everybody: on us who won the world title in Germany three years ago but also on others who showed their worth in these four years".

The other pre-season matches for Ciro Ferrara’s team are still missing some details and will be announced at a later stage. The Serie A championship will kick-off on the 22nd and 23rd of August.

Under 21 Suffer Unlucky Elimination

In the absence of Marchisio (suspended) and De Ceglie (injured) the azzurrini did not manage to beat Germany and go through to the final against England in the European Championships. Giovinco and company dominated the match and created a great number of goal scoring occasions which they did not manage to fianlize.

The team had hoped to dedicate a victory to Paolo De Ceglie but the mission failed mostly due to misfortune. On the 7th minute Giovinco saw the German keeper deviating a powerful shot from outside the area. The azzurrini continued to create a number of goal scoring opportunities with luck and the German goalkeeper Neuer denying them the joy.

On the 3rd minute of the second half it was Germany who opened the score thanks to Beck and against the flow of the game. Casiraghi’s team reacted well creating even more chances but the ball never crossed the white line and at the end the best team of the night was eliminated from the tournament.

Participations Defined - Paolucci Returns To Juventus

As per schedule today Friday 26th June at 19:00hrs the phase relative to participation agreements came to a close.

With regards to Juventus, the most relevant bit of news is that about Michele Paolucci. The Marchi forward in participation with Udinese but having shown his worth in the last season with Catania is back to being a Juventus player.

He is in fact the only player who will return to Turin. In all other cases, the participations were renewed and resolved in favour of the other clubs. Only in one case the sealed offers will be necessary.

Important names like those of Zalayeta and Mirante are of particular interest with both players having their stay at Napoli and Sampdoria respectively being renewed for one more season. The same applies to Volpe who will remain at Livorno.

Other players brought up in the Juventus nursery will not return. Guzman is from today completely owned by Piacenza just like Volpato is a Bari player and Del Prete one of Siena.

Only one case will go to the sealed offers which will take place on Monday 29th June and it regards Rizza, a defender in participation with Livorno.

Below are all the operations finalized in the last two days in detail.

Matteo Cavagna: will remain at Ravenna.
Andrè Cuneaz: articpation with Mantova renewed.
Lorenzo Del Prete: will remain at Siena.
Tomas Guzman: will remain at Piacenza.
Davide Lanzafame: participation renewed with Palermo
Antonio Mirante: participation renewed with Sampdoria
Michele Paolucci: resolved in favour of Juventus
Andrea Pozzato: participation renewed with Canavese
Giuseppe Rizza: no agreement (to be decided by sealed offers on Monday 29th June)
Rey Volpato: will remain at Bari
Francesco Volpe: participation renewed with Livorno
Marcelo Zalayeta: participation renewed with Napoli

Under 21, All Together For Paolo

A step away from the final act. After having won the group, the Under 21 team is ready to play for a place in the final of the European Cup. Tonight (at 20:45hrs live on Rai 1), in Helsingborg the azzurrini will be playing in the semi-final against Germany. The other match will see hosts Sweden playing against England.

Casiraghi’s team will therefore be seeking a victory to dedicate to Paolo De Ceglie, following the injury suffered during Tuesday’s match against Byelorussia which forced him to bid farewell to the rest of the squad and return home.

In the absence of De Ceglie the bianconeri in the squad are reduced to two with only Giovinco and Marchisio remaining. Out of the two only the Atomic Ant will be on the field against the Germans while the midfielder will be forced to watch the match from the stands due to suspension.

Coppa Italia 2009/10 Regulations Presented - Juventus On The Field In The Final 16 Stage

The Lega Calcio announced the regulations and the dates for the 2009/10 edition of the Coppa Italia Tim Cup. While waiting to know the name of the potential opponents which the bianconeri will meet in their run to the trophy, Juventus for now, only know the time when they will be getting into action.

Being once again top seeds, the bianconeri will enter as from the final 16 phase which will be played on a knock-out basis (with the home team being the teams with the better placing in the table), on three different dates: 10th and 15th December 2009 and 13th January 2010.

A single match will also decide the quarter-finals which will be played on the 10th and 27th of January 2010. Just like in the last edition, only the semi-finals will be played on a two-leg basis and these will take place on the 3rd and 10th of February. The final will be a single match at a neutral stadium on the 5th of May 2010.

The dates may change due to eventual television screenings.

De Ceglie Suffers Ankle Injury – Will Be In Pinzolo In Mid-July

As per schedule, this morning Paolo De Ceglie left Sweden and returned to Turin. The Under 21 European Championship came to an early end for him due to the injury suffered during Tuesday’s match against Byelorussia.

The young player from Valle D’Aosta underwent clinical tests which confirmed the first diagnosis done by the national team’s medical staff, that is an injury to the internal compartment of the left ankle.

De Ceglie will therefore have to undergo treatment and the necessary physiotherapy in order to be able to join the summer camp in Pinzolo on the 18th of July, the day which will also see the return of Marchisio and Giovinco, the other two bianconeri who formed part of Italy’s European squad.

The expedition is not yet over. Without De Ceglie and Marchisio (due to suspension), the azzurrini will be in action tomorrow Friday 26th June against Germany in the second semi-final.

Participation Agreements - Palladino Stays At Genoa

The Italian transfer market is at the stage of participation agreements which have to be resolved by Friday 26th June.

Juventus saw five cases being resolved today. The most important was that regarding Raffaele Palladino who will stay at Genoa. The participation agreement with the rossoblu was in fact extended by one year.

The same applies to forward Davide Lanzafame with Palermo and midfielder Andrè Cuneaz with Mantova.

Another two youngsters raised in the Juventus youth sector will not be returning to base. These are goalkeeper Andrea Pozzato who will remain at Canavese after having renewed his contract up to 2012 and midfielder Matteo Cavagna who was transferred to Ravenna permanently.

Azzurrini Win And Qualify For Semi-Finals

Giovinco, Marchisio, De Ceglie and company continued to keep the Italian flag flying high as they beat Byleorussia 2-1 winning the group and qualifying for the semi-final.

The starting line-up included all three bianconeri with De Ceglie forced to leave the field on the 14th minute due to injury being replaced by Dessena. On the 20th minute it was Marchisio who forced the keeper to a great save following a powerful shot from outside the area.

Italy had a number of chances with the defence clearing twice from the goal line but on the 45th minute it was the Byelorussians who went ahead thanks to Kislyak who surprised all. Two minutes later, during stoppage time Italy drew thanks to a penalty scored by Aquafresca following a handsball in the area.

The second half began with Italy on the attack and Aquafresca missing a couple of sitters and hitting a post. To top it all Marchisio was shown a yellow card on the 50th minute and will miss the next match.

Italy continued to attack and Giovinco saw the goalkeeper deny him a golden chance of score on the 70th minute. On the 75th minute Italy made it 2-1 once again thanks to Aquafresca following some great work by Giovinco and Candreva. Four minutes later the Atomic Ant hit the bar following a great attempt from outside the area.

After only one season, Juventus bid farewell to Olof Mellberg. The Swedish defender was transferred to Greek side Olympiacos for €2.5 million.

Having joined Juventus from Aston Villa on a free transfer last Summer, Mellberg’s stay in Turin has come to an end with 37 appearances (27 in the Serie A, 6 in the Champions League and 4 in the Coppa Italia) and two goals, both scored at the Rome Olimpico against Lazio and Roma respectively.

Internationals On Holiday. Back To Pinzolo On The 16th Of July.

With the adventure in the Confederations Cup having come to a rather disappointing end, the Italian national team left South Africa an was back in Italy in the morning. The 2008/09 season for Marcello Lippi’s men has therefore come to an end.

As from today even the six bianconeri who formed part of the group can enjoy their well deserved rest. Buffon, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Legrottaglie, Camoranesi and Iaquinta are on holiday and can recover from the fatigue of an entire season and recharge their batteries in view of the new one, which on paper promises to be even longer and more stressful.

2010 is the year of the world championships in South Africa during which the azzurri will have to defend the title won in Germany. All this, without forgetting the many and tough commitments with Juventus including the championship, Champions League and Coppa Italia.

For this reason, the six azzurri will have longer holidays and will not be immediately available for Ciro Ferrara at the start of the preparation. The day for their return is fixed for the 16th of July when they will join their team mates during the summer camp in Pinzolo.

Only three bianconeri have outstanding commitments at the time being. These are De Ceglie, Marchisio and Giovinco who are busy with the Under 21 European Championship in Sweden. With the semi-finals, just one step away (on the 26th of June) and the final on the 29th, the holidays of the three azzurrini will be extended until the 18th of July.

Trofeo Tim Changes Venue Again: From Turin To Pescara

Another bit of the Juventus summer is in place. After the participation in the Peace Cup was confirmed (in Andalusia at the end of July) and the official news about the friendly matches against Cisco Roma (on the 15th of July in Pinzolo) and Nancy (on the 19th of July in Joeuf, France), now the participation of Juventus has also been confirmed in the 2009 edition of the Trofeo Tim which will be played on the 14th of August.

After the lucky parenthesis at the Turin Olimpico where the tournament was played last year, it will now move to Pescara at the Stadio Adriatico. The opponents of Juventus will be the usual ones, that is Inter and Milan and as usual the tournament will be a triangular one consisting of three matches of 45 minutes each.

The 2009/10 Serie A

Exactly two months before the start of the 2009/10 Serie A championship all the teams participating and therefore all the Juventus rivals are known. Following the long sequence of play-offs in the Serie B, Livorno gained the 20th and last place in the table.

The team of president Spinelli beat Brescia on a two-legged encounter and thus returns to the top division after a year of absence.

The same goes for Parma. The Emiliani also made an immediate comeback after having been relegated in 2008. They thus return to the Serie A, a division in which they were protagonists for nearly two consecutive decades. The promotion of the gialloblu was a direct one at the end of the regular phase thanks to the second place obtained behind Bari.

The Pugliesi coached by former Juventus captain Antonio Conte dominated the last Serie B season and were promoted well ahead to the joy of the whole city who awaited this moment since the year 2000 when they were last relegated from the Serie A.

Bari, Parma and Livorno therefore complete the table taking the place of Torino, Lecce and Reggina, the three teams who were relegated to the Serie B at the end of last season.

With these final verdicts the 2008/09 is now definitely closed. The new championship will begin in two months time. On the 22nd and 23rd of August the first match day will be played.

Below is the complete 20-team line-up for the 2009/10 Serie A championship:

Juventus
Atalanta
Bari
Bologna
Cagliari
Catania
Chievo Verona
Fiorentina
Genoa
Inter
Lazio
Livorno
Milan
Napoli
Palermo
Parma
Roma
Sampdoria
Siena
Udinese

All In The Hands Of The Under 21 – A Step Away From The Semi-Finals

With the adventure of Italy’s senior squad in the Confederations Cup having come to an early end, Italy’s football hopes lie in the hands of the Under 21. Casiraghi’s team proceeds on its way in the European championship in Sweden and will be aiming straight for the semi-finals.

After having drawn against Serbia and beaten the hosts, the azzurrini can end the group phase at the top of Group A. The last match, on schedule for Tuesday night (20:45hrs) in Helsingborg against Byelorussia is decisive. De Ceglie, Marchisio, Giovinco and friends need one point to qualify for the next round but a win would guarantee the first place in the group.

Italy Crash Out Of Confederations Cup

Three goals suffered in the first half and the USA having beaten Egypt 3-0 led to the azzurri being eliminated from the Confederations Cup for having scored one goal less then the Americans.

Five bianconeri were on the field from the start: Buffon, Cannavaro, Chiellini, Camoranesi and Iaquinta. The first half saw Buffon making a couple of brilliant saves thus diminshing the damage while Camoranesi was an absolute protagonist in the second half. Good performances also by the other bianconeri.

The Brazilian goals were scored by Luis Fabiano (twice) and an own goal by Dossena.

Guest Blogger, Gareth: Vialli Thinks Juve Have Picked Up A Bargain.

Juventus legend Gianluca Vialli has made the sensational claim that new boy Diego is as good as Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona hotshot Lionel Messi.

This can only be good news for the Bianconeri faithful, with Pavel Nedved retiring a new star was certainly needed in Turin and from Vialli’s testament they’ve picked up another star.

This is what Vialli said in an interview with Tuttosport: "Diego is worth (the same as) Messi and Ronaldo,

"He is one of the top three best players in the world."

I was fortunate enough to watch Diego quite a bit last season during Werder Bremen’s UEFA Cup run. Although I wouldn’t go as far as Vialli just yet, the Bundesliga is after all perhaps not quite as strong as Serie A, La Liga or the Premier League, I can definitely see plenty of potential in Diego.

At 24.5million euros Diego could indeed be a steal, especially with some of the transfer fees being reported this summer, and should light up the Stadio Olimpico next season. The Old Lady are still in need of a few additions though and another centre-half and striker should be among the top priorities.

I doubt many would disagree that Internazionale will be the favourites to retain the title next season and the bookies pre-season betting odds also reflect this. However, with Diego on board and a few more players with real quality Juve could upset the Serie A betting odds and take the Scudetto.

With AC Milan in disarray and Inter still fighting to keep hold of Ibrahimovic it is Juve who have been the most successful so far in the transfer market of the bigger Italian sides. If Ciro Ferrara can pick up a couple of extra players with real quality Juve should put up a better fight for the title next season.

Italy-Brazil: Bianconeri In Previous Encounters

Nine world titles won by the two teams and 13 direct encounters: the matches between Italy and Brazil are of legendary proportions and this is rightly so as the two teams represent the best of football.

A large chapter in this story has Juventus players as protagonists. At least one bianconero dressed in azzurro is a protagonist in each match.

The first of the series dates back to the 1938 world cup semi-final which was by Vittorio Pozzo’s national team in France. In the formation which defeated the South American favourites by 2-1 the contribution of left fullback and impeccable marker Pietro Rava was fundamental.

On the 25th of April 1956, at the San Siro, the azzurri beat Brazil in a friendly by a round 3-0. The captain of the team was Giampiero Boniperti in his 29th apperance for the national side. The verde-oro had their revenge during that same year in Rio de Janeiro. Giovanni Viola was defending the Italian goal in his last appearance for Italy.

Italy and Brazil met again in 1963, once again in Milan. Pelè was made immobile by the rigid marking of Trapattoni, who at the time was a Milan half-back. In the centre of the defence was the unforgettable Sandro Salvadore, who was the Juventus captain for a long time.

On the 21st June 1970 Brazil and Italy were playing for the world title in Mexico City. The difference was too big with the azzurri losing by 4-1 and – a strange fact – there were no Juventus players in the line-up.

On the 9th of June 1973 Italy returned to beating the world champions. The goal of the final 2-0 was scored by bianconero Fabio Capello. Even though a lot has been said about his shot it is difficult to say whether the ball crossed the goal line entirely.

It was once again Capello on the 31st of May 1976 who inaugurated the match between Italy and Brazil on the 31st of May 1976 which was played in the USA. For the azzurri was simply a case of hay fire as the 4-1 defeat was unmistakable.

On the 24th of June 1978 Italy-Brazil was valid as the third place final of the 1978 world cup. The Juventus protagonist was Franco Causio, who scored the temporary advantage after heading beyond goalkeeper Leao. It was an illusionary goal since in the second half Nelinho and Dirceu turned the result around.

That of the 5th of July 1982 is an Italy-Brazil which is not for the feint of heart. Paolo Rossi became world famous for having eliminated Falcao and friends from the Spanish world cup. The Juventus centre-forward scored a hat-trick which every Italian remembers perfectly: a header from a Cabrini cross; a shot from outside the area following a defnsive error and a deviation in the area. Simply fantastic.

Nine years pass and the two nations meet again in a preparatory test for the Italia’90 world cup. In Bologno the guests won by 1-0. Vicini made use of only one Juventus player: Gigi De Agostini.

On the 17th of July 1994 Italy-Brazil is once again worth the final. The match was not an exciting one and the score remained unmarked even after extra-time. In the penalty shoot-out it was the error of Roberto Baggio (even though not the only one) that left its mark.
Three years later in the French Tournament the two teams gave life to a very entertaining 3-3. The golden boy of the night was Alessandro Del Piero who scored twice against the “adoptive Italian” Taffarel.

Finally, the latest match was played this year, on the 10th February 2009, at the new Wembley Stadium. The South Americans won by 2-0 and one can bet his boots that Gigi Buffon will do everything that avenge himself of the goals conceded to Elano and Robinho, dangerous men who are playing well even in the Confederations Cup.

Happy Birthday Michel!

Today, Sunday 21st June 2009, is the birthday of Michel Platini. The UEFA president turns 54. Juventus would like to send him their best wishes through this short article even though the immenseness of his career in bianconero, the affection of the fans, the joy and the enthusiasm which he transmitted to all those who were lucky enough to see him play are difficult to describe in such few words.

The Platini era (1982/83-1986/87) was rich in victories: due scudetti, a Champions Cup, an Intercontinental Cup, a Coppa Italia, a Cup Winners Cup and European Super Cup. Victories but also many unforgettable moments because he is an unforgettable player.

First and foremost for his many goals which made him merit the record of most consecutive victories as top scorer of the championship : three just like the number of consecutive times he won the Golden Ball. Then also for his free-kicks, particularly those that used to seat the keepers of the most important teams.

This is not near enough: Platini had an extraordinary vision of play which rendered him unique and a true leader of the team. Director on the field and leader outside of it he was such thanks to his personality, intelligence and uncommon shrewdness which made him go far in his life.

After an extraordinary career with Juventus, in fact, Le Roi became a coach leading the French national team for four years. With the Bleus as a player he won a European Championship. He then moved up to management roles up to reaching the top position in European football, that of UEFA president, a role while he has been occupying since January 2007.

On the 19th of July Juventus will be participating in a celebration in the village in which he was born: Jouef. To celebrate the 100th anniversary since the foundation of the local team, in fact, a friendly match between Juventus and Nancy has been organized.

Nancy is the team with which Platini won the first trophy of his career, the French Cup, with the next triumph being that of the national championship with St. Etienne. The rest is Juventus history – a beautiful story.

Giovinco Revels In Creative Role

Sebastian Giovinco made amends for missing Italy's best opportunity of their draw with Serbia by creating goals for Mario Balotelli and Robert Acquafresca in the 2-1 win over Sweden that lifted the Azzurrini into top spot in Group A.

Luck required

Despite the victory, however, the diminutive forward insisted Italy did not perform any better in Helsingborg on Friday than in their opening-day stalemate.

"We are mostly happy but, honestly, I think we played better against Serbia. But the three points today were vital regardless of how we played," the Juventus player told uefa.com. "We've always known that we are a strong team. I just think everything went our way today while it didn't against Serbia. You also need a bit of luck to win games."

Hole role

Italy coach Pierluigi Casiraghi started with three up front against the hosts, with Balotelli and Giovinco playing either side of central striker Acquafresca, yet after a few minutes he moved Giovinco into the hole. The Azzurrini immediately became more dangerous, with Giovinco creating a good chance for Acquafresca, then giving Balotelli a pass that the FC Internazionale Milano tyro curled in for the first goal.

"I'm happy as long as I play, it's not really important where," Giovinco explained. "Having said that, I think that role in the hole is the one that suits me best. I think I played well, I'm happy, but the most important thing is we won."

Second assist

After Balotelli's 38th-minute sending-off, Giovinco was asked to help in midfield, but he showed more magic in the attacking third in the second half, dribbling past two defenders wide on the right to earn a free-kick. His subsequent cross was met by Acquafresca, whose header gave Italy a 2-0 lead.

"That ball was just perfect," the Cagliari Calcio striker told uefa.com. "I escaped the Swedish defenders and scored.

Deserved victory

"I'm extremely happy, both for my goal and for the victory. As a striker, a goal is always important and this one in particular was because it helped us win a difficult game with only ten men. The team fought hard and we deserved the points".

"It's a pity about Mario's sending-off. Sometimes he has this kind of reaction but he will grow up. However, we proved this team is not Balotelli-dependent. We had been criticised after our first game and we responded on the pitch."

Under 21 Beat Sweden To Top The Table

Pieluigi Casiraghi’s azzurrini managed to beat the Swedish hosts of the European Cup and move to the top of Group A with four points.

As in the match against Serbia the starting line-up saw the presence of all three bianconeri: De Ceglie, Marchisio and Giovinco with all three having a good performance especially Giovinco who was inspiring to the team and who was also the brains behind the first goal scored by Balotelli on the 23rd minute.

A few minutes after the goal however (precisely on the 38th minute) saw a useless foul by the Inter striker leading to a direct red card and forcing the azzurrini to play with one man less for approximately 52 minutes.

Notwithstanding this on the 53rd minute Italy scored a second thanks to Aquafresca and even though the Swedish did try all in their power to equalise the closest they got to doing this was when they score the 2-1 on the 89th minute, a score which was maintained until the final whistle.
