A July Of Sweat And Satisfaction

Juventus will start preparing for the return match of the third preliminary round of the Europa League after 48 hours granted by coach Del Neri after the return from Dublin.

Tomorrow’s training session will begin at 16:00hrs and for the team it will represent something new this season. With the exception of the internationals (with the exception of Felipe Melo), who after returning from  the World Cup worked in Vinovo between the 19th and 20th July and eventually joined the team in Varese.

It will be the first time for Del Neri coaching the entire squad at the Juventus Center. There will be four days of work before the return match against Shamrock Rovers on Thursday 5th August in Modena, a week after the first leg.

It will be the longest period without a match since the first friendly against the Rappresentativa del Trentino which the team played against in Pinzolo on the 11th July. Since then the schedule was rather busy: against Al Nasr on the 15th July, against Hamburg on July 18th and then after 5 days on the 24th July the friendly match against Lyon in Cosenza, the last match before the one in Dublin on July 29th.

The team played 5 matches in all during July with a more then positive balance: 4 victories (amongst which the one against Shamrock Rovers in the only official match) and a draw, with 15 goals scored, and only 1 conceded from a penalty. It was an intense month to prepare as best the team can for an intense season.

Chiellini: "We Are On The Right Track"

After the victory against Shamrock, the defender from Livorno spoke of the situation. "We are working with the coach to give compactness to the team and we are once again finding good play organization".

Less then two weeks of work and already 180 minutes played 90 of which in an official match. Giorgio Chiellini began at top speed just like all the defence. In the two matches against Lyon and Shamrock, the bianconeri only suffered 1 goal (the only one in this pre-season) from a penalty and Storari hardly ever suffered any dangers.

The day after the match in Dublin, in which he had the honour of wearing the captain’s band, Chiellini spoke by means of his official website (www.giorgiochiellini.com), speaking mostly of the defensive aspect:

"The risks the defensive suffered were very few. We are working very hard on this. After two years in which we suffered many goals, the first thought of the coach was that of giving compactness to this team".

The first official match of the season has thus been archived positively especially because of the performance. It is a good sign in view of the return match on Thursday but especially for the rest of the season:

"I am very happy for the first seasonal victory – continued the defender from Livorno – obtained against a modest opponent but still dangerous seeing that they are already in mid-championship on an athletic level. The route undertaken is the right one. We all want to do well and we are starting to find a good organization of play even though we all know it is still a long way to go".

Amauri: "I Worked Very Hard To Start Scoring Again"

18 to go! If in Pinzolo he had promised a season in which he would have scored at least 20 goals, Amauri immediately started to count. Two goals (and a post) and Juventus started the Europa League in the best of manners.

After the match against Shamrock, the Italo-Brazilian has reason to be satisfied: "It is an important victory but we haven’t qualified yet. There are still 90 minutes to go. I am happy to have returned to scoring. I worked very hard for this. The most important thing to me is that I am well and to take my chances. I must go on like this because I have a great desire to make up".

Chiellini: "The Help Between Mates Was Fundamental"

Less then two weeks of work and immediately part of an official match. The azzurri fresh from the World Cup found themselves being shifted from South Africa to Dublin. Chiellini, Marchisio, Pepe and Bonucci did not lose any time and contributed right from the start of the Europa League.

The defence, completely Italian and very young and with great room for improvement did really well. At the Tallaght Stadium the duo Chiellini-Bonucci was seen at work for the first time and received the compliments of Del Neri. Chiellini, who was the captain for the day, said:

"We faced the match well and never risked anything. We had to score and win and that is what we did. In the defence we did well even though we know that we must improve. This was the first time we played together. The fundamental thing is to help one another and we are doing so."

"Before the start of the championship we must have come to an excellent point of cohesion. We all have a great desire to make ourselves available and start from scratch in order to cancel the bad season last year".

Pepe: "Playing As A Team Makes Up For The Lack Of Physical Condition"

A goal on his debut a few days ago in Cosenza against Lyon and a good performance in Dublin against Shamrock. Simone Pepe is getting used to the Juve world very quickly.

At the Tallaght Stadium, the winger from Rome ran for 90 minutes uniting quality with quantity. It is an excellent start which gives great hope for his first year at Juventus.

"Tonight we played in a warm climate, in a small stadium in which the supporters did all they could just like the players on the field. We have just begun our season and the condition is not optimal but playing as a team, like we did tonight, we can overcome this. With the passing of time and the improvement in form the situation can only improve".

Del Neri: "It Is An Important And Well Deserved Victory. Let Us Make A Step At A Time"

At the end of the first official match of the season, after less then a month of training, Luigi Del Neri can start to feel pleased. His Juve resembles him more every day. In Dublin the application of his instructions in intensity of play and the constant use of the flanks can be seen.

With one leg in the next round, even though Shamrock is still present (the return match is on the 5th August in Modena), the coach can draw a small first balance: "Today we obtained a victory in a match which counts. The victory is well deserved, important and encourages us to continue. We must make a step at a time, one match at a time without alluding ourselves. At this moment we must improve above all the physical condition that, in less then a month of preparation cannot be perfect".

"Amauri? He scored two goals, hit the post and gave the team depth. I am happy for him and for the team. Chiellini and Bonucci also did well having faced physically strong and aggressive attacks. The group is motivated and is leaving behind what happened last year".

Shamrock Rovers - Juventus 0-2

Del Neri fielded his classical 4-4-2 formation with Diego and Amauri as attacking duo. The bianconeri are immediately determined and well placed on the field showing great movement and precise passing.

Del Neri’s team did not take long to show their quality and on the 3rd minute Amauri receives a good ball and puts it past the keeper and into the net for the opener: 1-0. Two minutes later there is a great tackle by Lanzafame to clear a dangerous ball into corner.

On the 7th minute Juve with a number of attempts see the ball finally being cleared. Four minutes later there is a corner for Juventus: ball put into the area but cleared by the defence.

The 14th minute sees a free-kick for Juve after a foul on Motta. Diego puts the ball into the area but Pepe's header goes wide. Three minutes later, Diego enters the area with a beautiful move but does not manage to conclude well and the ball goes wide. De Ceglie protects the ball well avoiding a corner on the 20th minute.

Two minutes later, there was a corner for Juve: Diego puts the ball into the area but the keeper makes it his. On the 24th minute, there is a corner for Juve: ball into the area cleared by the defence. Three minutes later, there is a ball into the Juve area cleared well by Chiellini.

The 29th minute sees a low ball by Lanzafame into the area cleared by the defence. One minute later, there is a great exchange by Diego with Amauri and Lanzafame's attempt deviated into corner: from the flag the ball is saved by the keeper. On the 33rd minute there is a great ball by Lanzafame into the area with Pepe heading just wide

On the 37th minute, Amauri just misses impact with the ball after a good cross into the area by Diego. Three minutes later, there is a free-kick for Juve: Diego puts a precise ball into the area but it is a bit too strong for Pepe to head well and the ball goes wide.

The 41st minute sees a great move by Diego who enters the area putting a great ball towards Pepe who is anticipated at the crucial moment. Three minutes later, there is a corner for Shamrock: ball into the area put once again into corner by the defence. The second time the ball is cleared by the Juve defence.

The referee awards 1 minute of stoppage time and a Marchisio attempt from outside the area goes wide before the end of the first half.

The second half sees an aggressive Shamrock at the start. On the second minute, there is a ball into the Juve area by Stewart but Storari makes it his. The Juve midfield is under some pressure.

On the 5th minute, Amauri enters the area and with a brilliant series of moves finally manages to cross but the defence clears. Martinez comes on for Lanzafame one minute later.

Seconds later, Stewart puts a dangerous cross into the Juve area and a Murray header grazes the post and goes wide. On the 11th minute, a Turner ball goes high over the bar. Four minutes later there is a great run and conclusion by Amauri which hits the far post and bounces away. Unlucky!

The 16th minute sees a corner for Juve: the ball reaches Pepe outside the area who's shot goes wide. Free-kick for Juve after a rather bad foul on Diego three minutes later: the Brazilian puts the ball on the far post but the defence deviates into corner: the ball reaches Bonucci who heads wide.

The 21st minute sees Juve forced to a number of difficult interventions especially on Stewart. Two minutes later, a Diego shot is deviated by the defence. Corner for Juve on the 25th minute: ball cleared a first time and then the referee stops Juve for a foul in attack as the ball is once again put into the area by Pepe.

On the 27th minute Amauri again with a great run puts a good pass towards Marchisio who enters the area but does not hit the ball well and it goes wide. Diego is grounded in the area but the referee signals to play on one minute later.

Juve make it 2 on the 29th minute when Motta puts an excellent cross into the area and Amauri with a great header sends the ball into the back of the net: 2-0.

The 32nd minute sees a Bayly shot go just high over the bar. Del Piero comes on for Diego 3 minutes later. A great long distance missile by Amauri goes just wide on the 38th minute. Brilliant attempt!

On the 40th minute, Pepe dribbles well in the area giving a good ball to Del Piero who's shot goes inches wide. One minute later there is a corner for Shamrock: ball cleared by the defence and one minute later a Stewart attempt is saved well by Storari.

Ekdal comes on for Marchisio on the 44th minute. On the 2nd of the 3 minutes of stoppage time conceded, a Del Piero cross into the area is judged as being beyond the line by the referee. The last minute of the match sees a free-kick for Shamrock: action stopped for foul in attack.

The bianconeri bring home a 2-0 win victory and have a leg in the next round thanks especially to a brilliant Amauri and great determination and effort by the whole team.

The European Experience Starts In Dublin

Juventus are about to play their first official match of the season. The bianconeri will be playing in Dublin in a match valid for the first of leg of the third preliminary round of the Europa League against Irish side Shamrock Rovers.

The bianconeri have been working hard in the recent weeks in preparation for this match and this could be seen in the most recent friendly match against Champions League semi-finalists Olympique Lyon. Tha match however, even though an easier one on paper, could hide a number of obstacles especially since the Irish championship is already in full swing and Shamrock are leading the table.

Shamrock, on the other hand are aware of the difficulties of playing against a great team like Juventus but are determined to show their worth and leave a good impression.

Fine-Tuning At The Tallaght Stadium

Juventus has begun to get accustomed to the field of the Tallaght Stadium in Dublin where tomorrow at 20:45hrs CET (19:45hrs) local time they will be playing against Shamrock Rovers in the first leg of the third preliminary round of the Europa League.

The bianconeri after a warm-up and technique exercises took part in a 10-a-side mini-match on a reduced field during which Del Neri tried the various solutions in view of the match against the Irish side.

Present on the stands to follow the fine-tuning session were president Andrea Agnelli, CEO Jean-Claude Blanc and director general for sport affairs Giuseppe Marotta, who travelled to Dublin with the team in order to follow the first official match of the season.

Del Piero: "These Matches Are The Essence Of Football"

For who played on the most important football fields, enchanted the stadiums all over Europe, exited the Bernabeu and the Old Trafford with all the public applauding while standing in ovation, the Tallaght Stadium with only 6,000 places could seem a small thing.

This is not the case for Alessandro Del Piero. His moves are not only the result of his innate class but also from an unlimited passion for football, repeated more then once while speaking of the match against Shamrock Rovers:

"This sort of matches make you find the pure essence of football where all the surrounding is limited compared to the great matches and only the field counts. I am living this match with a great passion. I like these matches".

Del Neri: "Now The Serious Part Begins"

"We will be playing against an organized and physically strong team and therefore there are risks but it is the start of the season and we need a good result"

"Now things are getting serious". This is how Luigi Del Neri began the press conference held at the Tallaght Stadium on the eve of the match against Shamrock Rovers. The opponents may not be amongst the elite of European football but must not be underestimated:

"There are always risks and we will be playing against a team which is organized, well prepared, more advanced in training and physically strong. It is the start of the season and beginning with a good result is very important".

In order to obtain a good result Del Neri expects a great Juve: "I’d like to see that attitude shown against Hamburg and Lyon. We are obliged to play like Juventus. My team has great qualities and I think it can do well in this competition but we must be aware of the obstacles that such matches may bring. If we maintain the right attitude however, adding the quality of our players we can obtain a good result".

The coach did not reveal anything with regards to the formation: "I will have to examine the conditions of some of the players and tomorrow we will be on the field. I tried different solutions to see if certain players are compatible but I have not yet chosen who will play".

Del Piero, seated by his side underlined how in matches like the one against Shamrock the purest aspect of football is represented and a joy to live through: "All the players are passionate and want to play. I am convinced that Alessandro has this sort of attitude. The coach is obliged to field who can give the most and he is surely one of those players".

Juventus Bids Farewell To Varese

Juventus bid farewell to the people of Varese this afternoon at the end of the last training session before their departure to Dublin. It was a true ovation given by the public to the bianconeri with over 3,000 fans present on the stands of the Franco Ossola stadium while the players kicked balls in the direction of the stands as a small sign of gratitude for the great affection shown everyday during this second training camp.

Del Neri’s men, in the last session, first took part in a warm-up and then a light athletic part before being divided into two groups: on one side were 10 players in a 4-4-2 formation working on tactics in order to perfect the movements in attack and work on set pieces. On the other side another 8 players played a foot-tennis match and a 4-a-side mini-match on a reduced field. The rest of the team stayed in the gym. Giovinco and Camoranesi returned to the field a bit later in order to carry out aerobic work just as Vincenzo Iaquinta who is continuing with his recovery programme.

Chiellini: "Ready For Shamrock"

"We have been working well for a week and there are all the conditions to have a good season. It will be a year of sacrifice. We must start from zero and reconstruct the base but this is normal after what happened last year".

Giorgio Chiellini immediately joined in the philosophy of Del Neri and the club: working hard and not let too much enthusiasm take over. The defender knows he is part of a strong team but he knows just as well that the field will decide:

"The managerial cycle has ended, some players have changed there is much renewal going on and it is normal that time is needed. Three years ago we would have hoped to be on a different level, last year we thought we could do well and win something but we know how things went. Now we must examine our conscience, understand were we went wrong and work in order to improve".

When asked which are the objectives of Juve for next season, Giorgio remained with his feet firmly on the ground: "Realistically, when looking at last year, it is hard to win immediately. The gap from Inter is still quite big and even the supporters must understand it will be a year of reconstruction. A year zero, under many aspects and to say today that we can win the scudetto would be eluding them".

"The realistic object I think is to qualify for the Champions League and the fact that we are not taking part in it this season, really bothers us. We must rebuild the group and the team and this will happen only one match at a time and one training session after another. We are learning what the coach wants but we still have a long way to go and he was the first to tell us in a more direct manner".

With regards to Del Neri, Chiellini underlined the excellent impression he got: "He brought his ideas just as he did in every team he coached. We are trying to understand them and to find that compactness that we lacked last year and which was our greatest asset in previous years".

He was asked what he though of Diego in his new role and what impression he got of Felipe Melo after the World Cup disappointment:

"At these levels it is not a player who changes the team but the team that can change the performances of a player. Messi too did not manage to win the World Cup…if the team does well Diego too will do well. Melo seemed tranquil. After a while everything passes and I say this from experience because even though in a different manner even I was really disappointed in South Africa. We must overcome this and start again".

The Europa League preliminary is round the corner and Giorgio, after the 90 minutes played against Lyon is ready: "I am not the type who manages to stay put for long and so I worked during the holidays and I was a bit advantaged when we met again. Obviously, for the best physical condition I need some more time but I am ready to play".

"You say we are missing a central defender? At the moment there are 3 of us and Ferrero who can give us a hand if necessary and if we are well we are enough for the first part of the season. Clearly, we will need another central defender for the rest of the year and the club is looking for one".

Speaking of the transfer market, the press in the last few weeks had also spoken of Chiellini: "This sort of talk is normal but I never thought of leaving and the club confirmed this. I never felt I was on the transfer list even though before one speaks of this in person some doubts remain".

"As from our first meeting we were on the same wavelength both with the management and the technical staff. They are excellent persons and the first approach was very positive with all of them. The contract? I am really tranquil and am giving the maximum. On Thursday we have an important match that if underestimated would bring risks that I do not even want to think of".

"After this I will meet with the director. It took take a week more or less but we will reach an agreement. I am greatly bound to this club, to the supporters and this city. I joined when I was just a child, just over 20 years of age and I became a man and grew up as a footballer here. I think I will stay here for many years to come even though I cannot promise anything because this also depends on the club but I think we have the same will".

Just like in the case of Giorgio, the transfer rumours do not bother anyone from the team: "We speak very little of this in the dressing rooms and everybody seemed tranquil. Rumours exist but one must see how much of them is true. I think that in the recent weeks only Buffon and Del Piero did not feature in transfer rumours. I saw everyone with a great desire of a comeback and the commitment was unconditioned".

Finally a thought about the return match of the preliminaries which will be played in Modena and not in Turin: "In Summer it is nice to play in cities where we do not normally play during the season, just like in the case of Cosenza were we found great enthusiasm. I read that in Modena the stadium will be packed…It is nice to also see places away from Turin".

Filippi: "Manninger And Storari Are Two Exemplary Players"

"Everything is proceeding well. We had a slight setback with Manninger but it was brilliantly overcome. The lads are adapting, want to work and this is the most important aspect". The goalkeeper coach Claudio Filippi, spoke of the situation on Juventus Channel.

After nearly a month of work he got to know his “pupils” and is more than satisfied with their response:  "I had already coached Manninger for a year in Siena and so I knew him well while with regards to Storari I saw him play many times and therefore I already knew his characteristics well. Obviously, however, after these weeks both the positive and negative aspects came to light. Which are they? I will not tell you".

"Two players like them are a great example to youngsters like Bonassi and Costantino, who while training with the Senior Squad have the chance to improve because play at this level is much faster to that which they are used to".

In order to train the goalkeepers how to intervene on fast balls, Filippi often utilizes a shield with which to deviate a cross towards goal, stimulating the reflexes of the lads:  "It is used to create handicap situations for the goalkeepers- he explained -. If they manage to solve those during training they will have an advantage during the matches".

"We try to vary exercises as much as possible to make the lads attentive. The possibilities are multiple even because we are trying to create situations which will be encountered during the match".

Finally a thought goes to Gigi Buffon, the great absentee:   "A goalkeeper of extraordinary abilities. We await him with open arms".

The Ball Is Again The Protagonist

After this morning session completely dedicated completely dedicated to the athletic work, during afternoon training session the ball was again the protagonist since warming up, with bianconeri engaged in rallies and technique exercises.

After that, the group left for a few minutes the “tool”, working again on athletic part, with a series of sprints and chances of direction among poles, then they played a short match ten vs. ten on reduced pitch. The challenge ended up 3-2, with goals by Amauri, Salihamidzic Poulsen for whites and by Lanzafame and Del Piero for reds. A spectacular goal by the Captain, scored by a clean and powerful right kick from outside the area.

The session ended by a tactical exercise, to train movements in defensive phase. Felipe Melo did the first part of the training together with his mates to dedicate then to a series of pitch rounds for aerobic strengthening.

Tomorrow the last two training sessions in Varese, at 9.30 a.m. and at 4.30 p.m., before leaving for Dublin, on Wednesday.

Manninger: "Very Good Defense"

Training restart after a day at rest, saw Alexander Manninger back on the pitch, as he had to stop during summer camp at Pinzolo for a little pain at his calf. The Austrian goalkeeper, at Juventus Channel microphones, confirm his improvements:

"I worked in the gym with athletic trainers and, considering that I feel good, I went on the pitch to find the ball again. Ready for Dublin? I don’t know, I will listen to my body and I’ll let the Trainer decide, but I think that Thursday it will be too early to play a match after a ten days stop".

Alex followed his mates on the TV, playing vs. Lyon and he was positively impressed, most of all by defensive solidity: "I liked the team, tidy, precise and with a very compact defense. Soccer starts from rear guard and seeing it so solid it’s a pleasure that gives you confidence".

Tim Cup, 2010/11 Billboard Has Been Drawn

Coppa Italia Tim Cup 2010/11 takes life. This morning, at Lega Serie A head offices, the new billboard drawing has been done.

Juventus, top of the list after the 7th place at the end of the last championship, is on the left part of the billboard. The one that, on paper, seems to be the most insidious. On the same part also Roma – possible rival in quarterfinals -, Inter and Napoli.

Del Neri’s team will begin to play starting from second round (scheduled between December and January), but from today they know the lot from which the first rival will come out. A lot composed by two teams from Serie A (Catania and Brescia), two from Serie B (Varese and Cittadella), two from Lega Pro Prima Divisione (Como and Hellas Verona) and two from Serie D (Guidonia and Virtus Casarano).

The first matches are scheduled for August 8th. It’s about Como-Guidonia – the winning team will face Varese – and Hellas Verona-Virtus Casarano – the winning team will face Cittadella.

To look at the complete billboard, go to the page of Lega Serie A website.

Unwinding And Rest For The Bianconeri

A day of well deserved rest for Juventus: after the convincing victory in Cosenza against Lyon and the return during the night to Varese, the bianconeri will be enjoying a free day. To say the truth, the day began with an unwinding session which saw the players busy in Cosenza take part but even the rest of the team remained in Varese. The session consisted of a bout 40 minutes of light jogging and stretching.

The team will meet again tonight in Varese and tomorrow will get  back to work with two training sessions at 09:30hrs and 16:30hrs at the Stadio Franco Ossola. The same work schedule will be carried out on Tuesday, the day before the departure for Dublin where the bianconeri will be playing against Shamrock Rovers in the first leg of the Europa League third preliminary round.

The sessions in Varese will have the same rules applied last week. The sessions will be open to the public which may gain access to the stands at a price of €5. In order to purchase the tickets the ticket boot of the VIP stand situated on Via Bolchini will be open. The opening time is at 09:00hrs for the morning session and at 15:30hrs for the afternoon session.

For those supporters who will be driving to Varese, the most ideal parking space is at the PalaWhirlpool situated close to the stadium.

Motta: "We Are Creating A Great Group"

Just 20 days since his arrival, Marco Motta has already understood the Juve world very much. In the meantime, on the field, he is confirming himself as one of the liveliest while outside his statements are always punctual and mature.

Even the words in Cosenza, after the victory against Olympique Lyon are a testimony of this: "Unfortunately we conceded the first goal of the season but otherwise we conceded very little. Tonight we confirmed we are on the right track and winning helps winning. The most important thing is that a great group is being created".

Legrottaglie: "It Is Nice To Beat Such Important Team"

Before diving into the Europa League adventure, Juventus brought home a victory against a Champions League team. Beating Lyon, semi-finalist a few months ago in the most important competition, is a sign of the team’s improvement.

Nicola Legrottaglie, a veteran and protagonist since the very first day of the training camp in Pinzolo, drew a balance of these first 20 days of work. "It is always nice to beat an important team like Lyon, especially while not risking anything like we did tonight. We are improving one day after another both from a physical and a tactical point of view".

Juventus.com

Del Neri: "We Didn’t Suffer Much But We Can Improve"

Juve is improving one step after another. Compared to the match last Sunday against Hamburg, Juventus managed to beat a more fearsome opponent like Olympique Lyon. The inclusion of the internationals (Chiellini, Marchisio, Pepe and Poulsen) allowed a further leap in quality.

The 2-1 against the French side is good especially in view of Thursday’s match against Shamrock Rovers. Del Neri drew other indications and can be satisfied: "We worked very hard in the last few days but there is still much to be done and we can improve further. Tonight we conceded very little, it is true they were with one man less, but seeing their value we could have even suffered with a man more".

"On Thursday we will be playing against an easier team on paper but we must be careful. The players? Diego did what I expect from him. Pepe is motivated and has a working culture. Marchisio did well. With the role he has he couldn’t play for the full 90 minutes".

"The team is improving and but to get closer to being what I have in mind we need more time. The group is motivated and careful. Sometimes a bit too careful. When we learn how to stay on the field we have the great players who can make a difference".

Juventus - Lyon 2-1

If he wanted a true match in order to prepare in the best of manners for the preliminary against Shamrock Rovers, Gigi Del Neri was definitely not let down. In Cosenza, against Olympique Lyon, Juventus played a match which was far from a friendly one: high rhythm, great determination and hard fouls.

Juventus had a great night and answered as best they could to the affection of the people from Calabria. They beat the French side, semi-finalists in the last Champions League 2-1 with a great performance. Excellent in fact, if one considers the period and the work load.

After the opener by the guests thanks to a penalty by Ederson, Del Piero equalized from the penalty spot. In the second half the match winner was scored by Pepe following a fantastic cross by Diego.

The match is intense right from the very start. Lyon are further ahead in their preparation (the French championship starts at the beginning of August), but the bianconeri are more lively. The drawing near of the preliminary match against Shamrock forces them to leave nothing to chance.

Del Neri does not do this and “risks” Chiellini and Marchisio from the start. The rest of the formation sees Storari in goal, defence with Motta, Legrottaglie and De Ceglie, midfield with Martinez, Sissoko and Lanzafame with Del Piero and Amauri as strikers.

The Brazilian was immediately very lively and from his action on the right, Lanzafame did not manage to find Del Piero with an acrobatic turn. Driven by the enthusiasm at the San Vito, Juve is flying on the wings. From a great run be De Ceglie on the left, a dangerous bit of action with Del Piero sees the captain being grounded in the area. Russo signals to play on.

The referee awarded the French side a penalty two minutes later when Chiellini fouled Belfodil. From the spot, Ederson beat Storari. The match is always tougher and hard tackles are not missing. The one by Cissokho on Martinez and is too hard and unfair with the ball nowhere close and he is justly sent-off.

With one man more, the bianconeri assault the area of Olympique even more. Cris bloacked a ball with his arm (close to his body) on a shot by Del Piero. On the 39th Juventus equalized. This time a penalty was awarded in favour of Juventus and the captain made it 1-1 at the end of the first half.

In the second half Del Neri stayed faithful to tradition and changed the strikers. Trezeguet and Diego came in together with Pepe for Del Piero, Amauri and Martinez. After a few minutes, Marchisio made space for Ekdal. Juve were soon close to scoring with Chiellini who leaped up in the middle of the area and forced the keeper Vercoutre to a miracle.

After Pasquato came on for Lanzafame, Diego skimmed the bar from a free-kick. The sixth change sees Grygera coming on for Motta right in the middle of the second half. Former Juventus player Boumsong came on for Lyon.

Diego continues searching for his goal but once again finds the French keeper in his way, What the Brazilian manages to do on the 30th minute is as valuable as a goal. After receiving the ball from Pepe outside the area, he sees his mate in the area and serves him with a delicious one-two with a precise cross. The former Udinese player does not disappoint and scores with a beautiful right footed shot for a very special debut for Juventus.

Poulsen comes on for Sissoko. Diego is having a great night and all the public is giving him well deserved rounds of applause. He only fails to score and Vancoutre denies him the goal again with a beautiful save. Notwithstanding being one man less, Lyon tries to equalize but are only dangerous from set pieces. The best Storari is necessary to deviate a Kallstrom free-kick.

The result does not change. Juventus obtain a prestigious victory and a very useful one in view of the preliminary match against Shamrock Rovers. From Cosenza, Del Neri returns with many positive indications.

Del Neri: "We Will Be Ready For The Preliminary"

"We cannot take making it through the round of the Europa League for granted because we will be playing with 11 men against 11. We saw from the World Cup match against New Zealand how physique can create problems and we will be playing against a good team which is coming from a championship like the Irish one and therefore nothing is yet sure".

Gigi Del Neri, on the eve of the friendly match in Cosenza against Lyon is already looking at the match against Shamrock Rovers valid for the Europa League preliminaries: "We would have been working for a month and even though they played more they will be ready. As from tomorrow in Cosenza, some players will play for more then one half because in the Europa League we will have only 3 changes and therefore 8 will have to play the whole match. If the internationals will be playing against Lyon? We’ll see. They have been training for a week and therefore they could play for 20 to 30 minutes".

Del Neri is satisfied with how the preparation is proceeding: "I like the players’ attitude, the conviction, the application and the attention that they are putting into training. They are all anxious to give the maximum on the field. Who surprised me the most? I’d say the strikers: if I ask them to make long runs they suffer more then the midfielders but do not hold back. I appreciate very much their commitment on the field. The group is forming but we are trying to change on a tactics level in comparison to the past and therefore a lot of work is needed".

Del Neri is very careful with regards to the defensive aspect and the players of that department are being asked to be solid: "They must have precise duties and it is important that they move in harmony not as single players. I want a defence that knows how to work on its own without help from the midfield. There might be the case when the midfield is beaten and the defenders must make up on their own".

With regards to the attack, the coach underlined that he has not chosen the starting duo: "All the strikers give me great guarantees. I will choose according to the moment and their merit".

The subject then shifted to the transfer market: "The attack and the midfield are the less urgent matters. In front we have 5 players who last year were considered of a high level and I don’t think they have expired, in fact I see them as having a great will to do well. The same goes for the midfield where the four central midfielders are international players. We will see if the transfer market offers any players capable of improving our defence".

Soon for the midfield Del Neri will also have Felipe Melo available: "How to help him recover? By convincing him that he is an important player and convince him to work hard to recover his condition".

Asked whether the club has given him a minimum objective to reach, the coach answered: "No, because what could it be? Ending second or third? The final objective is irrelevant if you have one every Sunday. The objectives must be there each week because if you win the matches you also win the championship…".

Del Neri wants to create a great Juve and to do so he is also being inspired by past teams: "I think of the Juve of Tardelli, Bonini, Cabrini…of a club that used to choose young players but with a winning mentality. We must build a group that is strong and homogenous and that can keep up with the passage of time".

With regards to his colleagues, Del Neri explained that instead he  "learnt and tried to understand all the coaches he had and who he saw at work. The passion of Trapattoni, the pragmatism of Lippi, the human values of Nereo Rocco… Football is not only technique and tactics but also the will, enthusiasm and passion for the work. Mourinho? When one wins so much there must be a reason. I coached Porto for one month. It was his creation: he is a great worker and an excellent psychologist. These are very important aspects in football".

Lanzafame: "Juve Is Always Exciting"

"Seeing the length of the trip, it is better to travel to Ireland then to Israel. We do not know Shamrock Rovers, however and therefore we have to study them through videos". Davide Lanzafame looked at the next match in the Europa League but did not forget that in order to arrive to it in good condition, the team must work hard on a daily basis:

"We are improving – he explained on Juventus Channel – and now that the internationals are back we are working very much on tactics, adding new elements to our target and we will be ready for the friendly match against Lyon and the Europa League preliminary. If we are already a team? We need time for that. At first you get to know each other and get used to one another but to become a team you need months of work".

Davide has fit into the new reality, overcoming what could be understandable fears: "I am not afraid. I am 23 years old and already have some experience. Excitement however is always there when you wear the Juve jersey but I am convinced that after some time everything will pass".

Andrea Agnelli Visits Varese

After meeting the crowds in Pinzolo on the 7th July, Andrea Agnelli did not want to miss out on the second traing camp of the bianconeri. The President arrived in Varese in the late morning, had lunch with the team and visited the Stadio Franco Ossola where he was welcomed by over 3,000 supporters present and watched the training session together with Director General for Sport Affairs Giuseppe Marotta.

The bianconeri entered the field at 17:00hrs and after a warm-up where divided into two teams which first took part in ball circulation and possession exercises and then in an intense mini-match.

The first half which ended in a 1-1 draw saw a few good crosses by Pepe who was fielded on the left wing for the “whites” and substituted by Salihamidzic in the second half, as well as a beautiful cross by Del Piero towards Amauri’s head with the striker missing the ball.

The second half was also very lively and ended in a 1-1 draw thanks to the goals by Claudio Marchisio and david Trezeguet. The first: after a counter-attack led by Del Piero, the captain put in a great assist for the midfielder, who controlled the ball in the area, let it bounce and scored with a precise right-footed strike under the bar.

The second: a pass by Giovinco towards the Frenchman who from the penalty spot sent the ball to the right corner. Both goals were well made however Agnelli could not see them having left the stadium at the start of the second half. The session came to an end with aerobic exercises and stretching.

Bonucci: "It Must Be My Year Of Anointment"

He was forced to stop during yesterday’s training session due to a slight pain to his knee but it was nothing to worry about. Leonardo Bonucci began the press conference of the second day in Varese by putting everyone’s mind at rest:

"I have a slight pain in my knee that is not allowing me to run as much as I must and would like to. We will check my conditions with the medical staff and the coach and I think that within a few more sessions I can get back to training with the group. I don’t think I’ll be playing in Cosenza but this had already been decided by the coach. The objective is to play on the 29th July in the preliminary".

That will be the first official appointment of the season but on Saturday against Lyon the team will be breathing European air. Juve cannot miss out even on friendly matches: this is the message that Bonucci gathered from the visit by president Andrea Agnelli in Varese:

"He said a quick hello because we were eating but from that hello one could understand his desire to see a competitive team immediately starting from the friendly match on Saturday".

One of the recurring themes in the past few weeks is the possible competition between Del Piero and Diego: "There are no internal conflicts just a healthy competition which helps the player and pushes him to do better with every training session. The coach will then decide who to field whether Diego or Del Piero and the same goes for me and Legrottaglie".

Leonardo joined Juventus after an excellent season. The youngster leapt over milestones moving from Bari to South Africa and to Juventus: "My break through surprised all. I always believed in my potential but I did not think to get to the national team so quickly. Why did Inter transfer me? There were transfer market necessities and I was transferred to Genoa. It was a stroke of luck because if I’m here I owe it to that transfer".

With regards to the World Cup adventure, which he was part of without playing, he pointed out: "It wasn’t a holiday. I didn’t go on safaris: I trained everyday and obviously I was hoping to play but we were always tailing and it is hard for a defender to enter the field in such circumstances I think I am still part of the azzurri but it is up to me to confirm the good I did last year. The call-up is not granted just because I was one of the 23 players in South Africa".

The bianconero is once again  united with Chiellini with whom he forms one of the strongest and most complete central duo on the international panorama: "Yes, me and Giorgio form a great duo and we complete one another. With the national team we trained together. It was a good start and I hope it will keep on improving. Whether he gave me any advice? No, we spoke of the movements the coach wants from us: he insists a lot on shortening the centrals on the winger that is held by the fullback. He does not want us to stay in the centre of the area but to cover if the fullback is beaten".

Europa League: Juventus To Play In Dublin On July 29th

Juventus will be meeting Shamrock Rovers on the 29th July in the first match for this season. The Irish side beat Bnei Yehuda 0-1 in tel Aviv thanks to a goal by Stewart on the 70th minute (1-2 aggregate) and will be hosting Juventus in Dublin.

The bianconeri had to wait for the result between Sporting Fingal and Maritimo to know where they will be playing the first match, but due to the elimination of the other team from Dublin (2-3 at home against the Portuguese side) Del Neri’s team will be playing the first leg on away grounds as previously stated by the draws.

The first leg against Shamrock Rovers will this be played in Dublin on the 29th July (exactly a week from today) with the return match in Modena on August 5th.

Del Neri Concentrates On Tactics

Already since the training camp in Pinzolo the will of Mr. Del Neri to pay special attention to the defense mechanisms was evident and in Varese the music did not change. This morning’s training session began with the team divided into two groups: on one side were the midfielders and attackers, who after a warm-up went to the gym, while on the other side was the defence which immediately concentrated on the attacking phase with the opening of the centrals to the fullbacks that attacked in turn.

The defenders continued with a 4-a-side mini-match on a reduced field before returning to the different department mechanisms with Del Neri and deputy Francesco Conti who were careful to correct even the minutest details. Afterwards it was the turn of the midfielders and attackers to work on technique first, with a series of exercises and mini-matches with four goals of smaller dimensions and on tactics with exercises on pressing and ball circulation. Stretching and greetings to the supporters ended the session.

Marotta: "Positive Signs"

He was born in Varese on the 25th March 1957 and was brought up as a manager in the locality and therefore it is natural for the Director General for Sport Affairs to act as host:

"The second part of the training camp started off very well – he told Juventus Channel – both with regards to logistics and organization which were guaranteed by the local administration and also from a public point of view".

"The supporters gave the team a warm welcome and this is something new for Varese. This means that the reputation of the club is high and that there is a consensus round the team. It is a good sign in view of the season which will soon see us busy with official matches with the Europa League preliminaries".

In view of the first European matches, Marotta did not hide his excitement: "It is a commitment which we must not underestimate because in any case we will be play against a highly motivated team which is well ahead of us when it comes to preparation. I am definitely excited even though I hope that Juve can return to playing on more important stages as is the wish of the club. The Europa League is a prestigious competition but Juventus should have other ambitions".

In order to return to competing for the best titles a great deal of hard work is necessary and Del Neri is a guarantee in this sense: "The club created a dynamic structure that has in the coach a point of reference. His daily work is well received by the players and this augurs well for the future".

Finally, regarding the transfer market, Marotta underlined that: "is open until the 31st August, and therefore there can be changes even though the situation is rather at a stand stikll due to the limited number of transfers, not only in Italy".
