Champions League Draw At 6 pm
It's time for the real Champions League now. After the end of the qualifiers, the 2008/09 edition has all the names of the 32 clubs enrolled. At the end of the games played last night, the following teams also qualified:
Fiorentina, Anorthosis Famagusta (Cyprus), Basel (Switzerland), Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine), Atletico Madrid (Spain), Aalborg (Denmark), Bate Borisov (Belarus), Liverpool (England), Fenerbahçe (Turkey), Arsenal (England), Dynamo Kyiv (Ukraine), Olympique Marseille (France) and Steaua Bucharest (Rumania), adding to Greek side Panathinaikos and Spanish team Barcelona who qualified Tuesday. And Juventus, naturally.
The sixteen clubs came through the qualifiers, adding to the 16 ones who'd already earned qualification directly. Now all 32 await with trepidation this afternoon's draw (at 6 pm) in Monte Carlo, to know how the eight groups will be arranged.
The names of the teams are known now, and also the four seeding pots, established following the UEFA ranking. Indeed each group will comprise a team from Pot 1, one from Pot 2, one from Pot 3 and one from Pot 4.
After Schalke 04 were knocked out by Atletico Madrid, Juventus have been promoted to Pot 2, which means avoiding opponents such as German sides Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen, Portuguese teams FC Porto and Sporting Lisbon, Spanish club Villarreal and Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in the first group stage. As well as Roma, of course.
A trip to England, Spain or France looks certain, though. In Pot 1, apart from Inter Milan, are all four English sides (Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal), the two legendary Spanish Clubs (Real Madrid and Barcelona) and multiple French title holders Olympique Lyon.
There are potentially dangerous opponents in Pots 3 and 4 too, however, as are some possible surprise teams. In just a few hours all shall be revealed. The draw in Monte Carlo will be shown live on RAI as well as on Sky Sport. Juventus Channel will also show a special programme at the end of the draw with live comments from Juventus representatives.
To recap, these are the 32 teams enrolled and how they've been divided into the four Pots.
