The taste of Europe in Nyon did Juve good. The day after the draw that officially set out their Champions League course, Juventus (playing for the first time with their gold-coloured shirts) got a memorable win on Arsenal's home turf. The Emirates Cup began in the best way, with a 1-0 win, with the only goal scored by Trezeguet after 37 minutes, but then sealed by an excellent all-round performance, particularly from the defenders, who never struggled, not even after the imposing Adebayor came onto the pitch.
As announced on the eve of the game, Claudio Ranieri split the squad in two and started with the following line-up: Buffon in goal, Grygera, Mellberg, Chiellini, and Molinaro in defence, Marchionni, Sissoko, Tiago and Nedved in midfield, and Trezeguet with Iaquinta up front; practically the same line-up that faced AC Milan at the recent TIM Trophy.
The hosts started well and rode on the wings of their many young players' enthusiasm, but apart from a Ramsey shot, Buffon never had to make any noteworthy save. Minute by minute, Juventus grew and were able to exploit their superior experience; David Trezeguet also came into his own. The Frenchman scored twice in the space of a few minutes. The first goal was disallowed though, but not the second, which put Juve in front after 37 minutes.
In the second half, Wenger put on his best players: Adebayor and Gallas from the start, then later Nasri too. The Bianconeri held on well at the back and had a few interesting chances on the counter-attack. Around mid-second half, Ranieri also made some changes. First Salihamidzic took Nedved's place, then Camoranesi and Amauri came on for Iaquinta and Trezeguet, and finally Poulsen, Ekdal and Rossi replaced Marchionni, Tiago and Sissoko.
Of these, the liveliest was Camoranesi who did some remarkable things in midfield. Salihamidzic almost made it two with a long-range shot saved by Fabianski. Arsenal tried scoring up to the end, but Juventus' defence kept them confidently at bay and the 1-0 score never changed; in the end they got a prestigious win that could also pave the way for victory in the tournament.
Juventus will have the chance to repeat themselves on Sunday (at 2 pm local time, 3 pm in Italy, live coverage on Italian Sky Sport 1), against Hamburg, hopefully overtaking Real Madrid, who beat the Germans 2-1 earlier today.
Due to the tournament’s rules, the Spanish team are currently in first position with five points (three points for the win and two more for the goals scored), in front of Juventus with four, Hamburg with one and Arsenal with no points.
