In Alex And Antonio's Hands
The prognosis has been confirmed. Juventus will have to go without Gigi Buffon for a few weeks. Definitely not great news for Claudio Ranieri, who recently has had to do without other important players such as Trezeguet, Zanetti and Zebina, to name but those who have been out the longest.
For the next few games, which include fascinating clashes such as those against Napoli, Real Madrid, Torino and Roma, the Bianconeri's defence will be guided by Alex Manninger or Antonio Chimenti in goal.
In view of his recent appearances caused by Buffon's first injury, Manninger is the favourite. Signed up in August, the Austrian keeper immediately showed his worth, confirming the qualities he'd already shown at his previous Italian Clubs; especially in the last few years at Siena, where he played with some of his current team mates such as Molinaro and De Ceglie.
Having to come on in the Cagliari game, he was immediately a star with a couple of decisive saves in that win at the Sant’Elia. He started the next three games too, and they all ended with draws, against Catania, Sampdoria and Bate Borisov. After becoming the first choice keeper in his National team, he now has the chance to face prestigious opponents, including Torino and Bologna, two of his former Clubs.
If needed, Claudio Ranieri knows he can count on Antonio Chimenti too, who’s always ready to put his vast experience to the service of the team, as he showed in pre-season with the high standard of his performances.
The Bianconeri's goal is in good hands with Alex and Antonio, and Buffon can recover without worrying.
