Ranieri: "An Even Better Second Round"
One round has ended, on with the next. After having brought the first round to a close with the draw against Lazio and most of all with the second place in the table and three points behind Inter it is time to move on.
Obviously, against Fiorentina, a team that the bianconeri met at the end of August obtaining a draw, which was badly digested due to the equalizer scored by Gilardino in the final seconds of the match.
Just like the defeat at the Olimpico a year ago. Ranieri has not yet won against Prandelli’s team since he has been at Juventus. Now he will be seeking to obtain a very important victory. With three points the bianconeri would catch up with the leaders, even though this would be temporary. However the coach does not want to speak of this.
"The table does not interest us at this point in time. Our duty is to think of our match. Fiorentina is a good team. I don’t think they are going through a crisis but when there are these negative moments one must be even more careful. Last year’s match? It was a defeat not a warning for what awaits us. We will have to field great concentration".
When speaking of Juventus, Fiorentina and Ranieri one cannot avoid having a look at the past. The famous match of 1994 to be more precise, when the bianconeri won 3-2 coming back from 2-0 thanks to a great goal by Del Piero who at the time where coached by Ranieri. A very vivid memory.
"Many things have changed since then but not Del Piero. His strength is incredible. When he wants something he will get it. When he scored that goal I got very angry at my players for the way they had played after being in advantage. But there is one thing that interests me at the moment and that is the fact that today’s Juventus has a lot in common with the one at that time".
That Juventus coached by Lippi began its triumphant march in January just as today’s team would like to do. Ranieri is hopeful:
"We had a great first round but I expect an even better return and to do so we must continue improving. The championship is open and sought for but at the moment we are only half-way. We want to be there even at the end. Inter is difficulty? We have all had a difficult moment since the start of the season. But if 2009 is different from 2008 there will be lots to see!"
