Viareggio Tournament Group Draws
The first match, on schedule for the 9th of February is still a month away but as from today the 61st edition of the Viareggio Tournament has come to life.
The greatest worldwide competition for youths in football, which has been re-named from this year as the Viareggio Cup, had its official launch on Thursday. In fact the draws were made for the group stage.
Juventus who will participate with Maddaloni’s Primavera was drawn in Group 2 with Parma, Frosinone and the Israeli team of Maccabi Haifa.
The tournament which will come to an end on the 23rd of February will have a new format. The 40 teams entered were divided into 10 groups. Five of the groups are inserted in Section A while the other five in Section B. From each section 8 teams will emerge (the winners of the 5 groups and the three best runners-up) who will then take part in the last sixteen. From this stage on the tournament will be played on a knock-out basis up to the final.
Let us go back to the bianconeri’s group. The classic rival is Parma who this year has already succeeded in beating Juventus bringing the bianconeri’s clean run to a stop. It was the most unexpected of victories when one considers the fact that Parma are fourth from last in a season which has been so far a dry one with regards to satisfaction. The same position is occupied by Frosinone in Group C. The Israeli team, on the other hand, is still one to discover.
