Viareggio, Last Effort To Reach Final 16
After having won the first two matches (2-0 against Maccabi Haifa and 1-0 against Parma), the Primavera awaits the third and final encounter of the first phase. Being a step away from qualification, Maddaloni’s team must wrap up their qualification against Frosinone (already eliminated) in a match scheduled for 17:00hrs at Rosignano, province of Livorno.
The match is one of significance importance in light of the rest of the tournament. Even though the victory of the group can come beforehand (Maccabi and Parma play at 15:00hrs and if they draw they cannot reach the top of the table), there is however the necessity to end the phase with as many points as possible.
The tournament’s format sees the table divided into Group A and Group B, both made up of 5 sub-groups. The regulation state that only 4 out of the 5 group winners shall be seeded for the draw of the last 16.
At the moment, in all 5 sub-groups forming Group A (the one which includes Juventus), there is a team with full points : Inter in Group 1, Juventus in Group 2, Torino in Group 3, Sampdoria in group 4 and Siena in Group 5.
Therefore, beating Frosinone and improving the goal difference would put the bianconeri in a privileged position in order to be drawn against a runner up from Group B.
Today will see the end of the first phase of Group A and tomorrow that of Group B. By Saturday night, the table of the 16 qualified teams will be clear and after draw so will be the encounters. The 8 matches in order to qualify for the quarter-finals will be played on Tuesday 17th February.
