Ferrara: "The Emotions Are Very Strong And Intense"
It will be very difficult for Ferrara to ever forget the 24th of May and the match against Siena which will see him make his debut as coach of Juventus, the club with which as a player so him winning so many trophies. In the first press conference before a match, Ciro spoke of this as well as of the first few days as coach of the bianconeri.
"The emotions are very strong and intense, obviously different from the ones experienced before but I am happy and very motivated. With each day that passes I am finding it a bit easier".
The change on the bench came to match days before the end of the season and in addition to this the players knew Ferrara differently from being their coach:
"I think I was very coherent in my words and I spoke very clearly to the team. As I said in the presentation press conference one must understand the difference between friendship and professionalism. There must be the right respect. I am very happy because I found very professional players who made themselves available immediately".
"During the training we were concentrated on our work. It was difficult to work on tactical things and drastically change this but I tried to work on the psychological aspect, on helping the players believe in themselves and on motivation. I wanted to show the players that they can achieve very much with very little effort. I saw the players gain motivation and I am happy about this. Probably in these months it was a mental condition that stopped us and therefore in this case I tried to work on this. We obviously also worked on tactics trying to find the right equilibrium, we worked on the defence but it is not like you have a medicine close at hand".
Siena have a good track record in home matches: "Siena has a great coach who works very much on tactics and the defensive side and which is very strong at home. We on the other hand have very high motivation but I am sure Siena are very highly motivated too because I am sure they want to leave a good impression in the last home match of the season".
Captain, Alessandro Del Piero suffered a blow to the left thigh during training two days ago but seems to have recovered:
"Del Piero has recovered and should be available. The squad is made up of players who are all capable of playing but I will have to choose according to what I saw during this week. Amauri, suffered the consequences of the injury but I want to speak more of the team rather then the individuals".
"I wanted to see what possibilities there were with regards to the formation and I still have one night to think of it. I don’t think there will be a great difference. It is not up to me to say if a change was necessary but what is necessary is a change in results in these last two matches. The potential of the team is the same as that which saw them win in Madrid and in other important matches. That is the real Juventus, the Juve of that period".
As a coach Ciro Ferrara’s match against Siena will be a baptism of fire, however the experience as Lippi’s assistant in the national team and as director of the youth sector will surely help:
"I hardly ever expected to sit on the bench of one of the best and most important teams in the world and so I am very happy. The experience with the national team is very important. Even when I was called up by Lippi to assist him during the world cup it was very important for me. Lippi is the absolute protagonist however, and we as his collaborators have other jobs to do".
"Even my experience in the youth sector helped me a lot. I am not influenced by anyone. Obviously there are coaches who left their mark on my career and I witnessed their training methods and how to manage a group but I cannot say I am inspired by one in particular. I am trying to do my job in the best manner. A coach must be able to adapt according to the squad in hand and the players he has".
The coach for the next season is a decision which Juventus still have to take but John Elkann’s words in the last few days surely made Ciro happy:
"I took the decision without thinking twice and I am still very convinced. I am grateful and happy with Elkann’s words but I know it is the field that will be the proof which everybody wants. I think that the club already has a clear idea who the coach will be next year and therefore also of the players who they will be attempting to bring to Turin. We’ll have to wait and see with regards to me".
Coming from the youth sector what does Ferrara think of building a team around youngsters? :
"It is obvious that a club like Juventus needs great champions but with these it is important that the youths work with these players. Juventus, even due to the season in Serie B, has 3 or 4 youngsters who are doing well. We must however, let them mature and gain experience without putting too much pressure on them".
