Iaquinta Leads Azzurri To Victory
In a match which saw the azzurri having to come back from disadvantage three times it was Vincenzo Iaquinta who scored twice in five minutes to put the azzurri back on track.
The only bianconero in the starting line-up for the azzurri was Legrottaglie who played a good match confirming his mastery at the centre of the defence. The azzurri, with many of the more established players left on the bench by Lippi and with Cannavaro having to miss out due to a slight injury, suffered the physical strength of the All Blacks in the first half.
On the 13th minute Smeltz scored the opener with the azzurri reacting and equalizing on the 32nd minute thanks to Gilardino. New Zealand however, insisted and on the 41st minute was again went ahead with a goal scored by Killen.
The second half was characterised by a number of substitutions. On the 47th minute Gilardino managed to equalise a second time with Killen once again putting New Zealand ahead from the eleven metres nine minutes later. On the 60th minute Lippi decided to bring on Vincenzo Iaquinta and Mauro Camoranesi for Pepe and Quagliarella respectively and both bianconeri immediately made a difference.
Seven minutes after coming on to the field in fact Iaquinta scored a beautiful goal from a rather lateral position equalizing and five minutes later scored the match winner fixing the result on 4-3 on the 72nd minute.
Apart from the three bianconeri involved in the match in Pretoria, the other bianconero who was busy was Olof Mellberg who’s Sweden beat Malta by 4-0 and thus won themselves some qualification hope back.
