Unlucky Azzurri Suffer Defeat Against The “Pharaohs"
A good performance by the azzurri was not enough in what turned out to be an unlucky match. Egypt managed to beat Lippi’s team on the only real shot on goal in the whole match.
The match saw four bianconeri in the starting line-up: Buffon, Chiellini, Cananvaro (captain) and Iaquinta.
On the 10th minute Chiellini cleared into corner after a dangerous Egypt incursion. Two minutes later Rossi with a great shot saw the ball going slightly over. The biancoenri had a good performance and stayed on for the whole of the 90 minutes with Iaquinta once again showing the excellent state of form he is in.
The 24th minute saw a good Iaquinta shot being saved with difficulty by the keeper. Two minutes later a great Rossi long-distance shot saw the keeper once again perform a miracle to put the ball into corner.
On the 39th minute came the only real occasion for Egypt in the whole of the match: A great save by Buffon who deviated into corner following a powerful long-distance shot. From the flag the ball reached Homos who headed home (1-0).
The second half was absolutely dominated by the azzurri who were also playing against Lady Luck. On the 54th minute Iaquinta with a good opportunity saw the ball bouncing on his knee making the finishing difficult and favouring the Egyptian keeper.
On the 58th minute Lippi made a double substitution: Toni and Montolivo came on for Rossi and Gattuso respectively with Pepe coming on for Quagliarella 6 minutes later.
The azzurri continued to attack incessantly and on the 70th minute a good shot by the incredible Iaquinta saw the keeper clearing with his knee. The same is repeated 8 minutes later when the Egyptian number one performed yet another miracle on the Juventus striker. Who on the 86th minute also hit the corner of the post from an impossible position.
The five minutes of injury time given were characterised by time wastage on behalf of the Egyptians and in the last minute Buffon also left his goal in a desperate attempt to equalise, an attempt which remained unsatisfied.
