Cannavaro: "I Came Back To Win"
Finally, Juventus and Fabio Cannavaro are back together. They are no longer opponents as was the case last autumn in the Champions League in the two matches against real Madrid. The captain of the national team is back in bianconero, ready to re-write a story which was interrupted in 2006.
The departure of the Neapolitan defender to Spain was one of the consequences of Calcipoli, a separation which 3 years later, is still not accepted by some. During the training camp in Pinzolo, Cannavaro suffered a number of protests from some supporters and his first press conference was an opportunity to clarify the situation:
"I am really sorry about these protests. In 2006 we parted finding the best solution for both parties. The club made money and I went abroad but the first to be sorry for having to leave was myself. In Turin my family and myself were happy and I still feel that the scudetti won on the field belong to me".
"In these past few days I spoke to the supporters who said that they did not like some of my comments with regards to preferring Napoli to Juventus. I never received any offers from other clubs and as soon as Alessio Secco showed me they wanted me back I accepted immediately".
"I am sorry that some may have misinterpreted my words. I did not intend disrespecting anybody. I hope this situation can come to an end, most of all for the good of the team. In these last few days I saw a great atmosphere surrounding the team and working in tranquility can only help us".
Cannavaro was however greeted well by the majority of the supporters in Val Rendena and wants to re-pay this on the field. A few days of camp and Fabio was able to rekindle known sensations:
"In these years, many things have changed but the winning mentality has remained. This forms part of the culture of this club and I have come back to win more and to avail the team of all my experience. I am well and I believe I can still give a lot on the field. The team is competitive and even stronger then last year. The important thing is to think only of ourselves, be aware of our strength and not compare ourselves to others".
The defender returned and found many friends with which he had parted, many friends who are still playing and fighting and one which changed role.
"I have always had a good relationship with my mates and when I left I explained to them my reasons. In these years we kept in touch and met in the national team. Ciro? Obviously, I call him mister. There is much respect and friendship between us but now he is the coach and he is the one to make the choices even though I admit it is strange to see him in this role".
