Italy In A Goalless Draw On The Day Of Cannavaro’s Record
In the friendly match played by the azzurri in Basle and which ended 0-0 5 out of the 6 players called-up by Marcello Lippi were in the starting line-up: Buffon, Chiellini, Camoranesi, Marchisio and Cannavaro who celebrated the record of appearances with the Italian national team (127) breaking that held by Paolo Maldini.
The azzurri had a good start to the match and in the first half created many goal opportunities, one of which by Marchisio. Switzerland hit the horizontal bar. A negative note to the match is the injury of Camoranesi who was forced to the leave the field half an hour into the match. In the second half Iaquinta came on to the field creating a number of chances while in the middle of the second half Marchisio was substituted by Grosso. In the dying minutes of the match the azzurri tried to break the deadlock to no avail.
At the end of the match Marchisio felt sorry about the goal he missed: "Scoring on my debut would have been perfect, however I am happy of having been in the starting line-up and on the day of Cannavaro’s important record". It is then Cannavaro who comments: "It is a great honour to play so many times in azzurro. It is the dream of every player".
