Mariella Scirea sent a letter to daily newspaper “La Stampa” which was published on today’s edition, as an invitation to the supporters of the stand which bears the name of the unforgettable Gaetano to behave in a civilized manner.
SE CHIAMARSI CURVA SCIREA HA UN SENSO (IF BEING CALLED THE SCIREA STAND MAKES SENSE)
On Saturday night, I too will be at the Stadio Olimpico. I hope that Juventus-Inter will be a correct match on the field and in utter good will outside and on the stands. Then, obviously, may the best team win […].
Gaetano was against any type of offence: the colour of the skin, the dead, and persons both opponents or mothers of opponents. I have faith in our supporters and in the will to be superior to the most basic of instincts and perhaps even to the high provocation of others […].
Stadiums are not theatres but they must not become shallow. A stand that bears the name of Gaetano Scirea should be double committed to bring forth a battle, free of demagogy, and have as the main objective the collective intent of cancelling damaging and vulgar chants. All: without distinction.
Being called the Scirea Stand means a privilege and a responsibility. My husband followed a concept of football which was out of the ordinary. He lived by it without hysteria which, today, seems to have become a predominant and fixed system.
On the 3rd of September it was the 20th anniversary since the demise of Gaetano, and the supporters continue to be very close to him, in their memories and affection. It is for this reason that I would never want to ask myself if it is still worthwhile that a stand carries his name. Having said this, the uncivilized sporting manner of many Italians is not born in the stadiums but is brought into them.
