An extraordinary champion but most of all a gentleman. An example to all: team mates, opponents and supporters. The greatness of Gaetano Scirea cannot be recounted only by means of his gestures on the field, statistics and successes because these are the result not only of his class but also of his character, reserved but strong that led to him being loved by all the football fans in the world.
On the field he was an uncontested leader, a stalwart of the Juventus defence, which he safeguarded for 552 matches, during which, notwithstanding he was the last man, he was never sent-off. With Juve he won 7 scudetti, 2 Coppa Italia, 1 Champions Cup, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 1 Cup Winners Cup, 1 European Super Cup and 1 UEFA Cup. An immense trophy cupboard just like his talent.
Gaetano passed away on the 3rd September 1989, exactly 21 years ago, following a traffic accident in Poland, where he was to watch the future opponents of his Juve as assistant coach and deputy of his friend Dino Zoff. This year, when Juve visit Poland to play in the Europa League against Lech Poznan, the thoughts will once again go to “Gai, the elegance with which he wore the Juventus jersey and once again, thanks to him, we will feel even more proud of being Juventini”.
