Juventus won the first match of the triangular tournament after penatlies following a 1-1 draw at the end of the regular 45 minutes.
Juventus on the field with a 4-2-3-1 formation immediately showed they mean business showing an initial agressiveness with Amauri the as the apex of the bianconeri attack. On the 4th minute Inter benefitted of a free-kick from outside the area but the ball went wide with Buffon still diving to make sure.
On the 6th minute A great Juventus initiative saw Salihamidzic put the ball into the area with Amauri not able to head dangerously. On the counter-attack Buffon was forced to a rather difficult save on Quaresma. Three minutes later a dangerous Amauri cross sees a beautiful attempt (low flying header) by Poulsen with the ball going inches wide.
The 10th minute saw a great bit of action for Juventus with Melo winning a ball in midfield and the whole forward line running towards the area forcing the Inter defence to clear with difficulty. One minute later a good Cannavaro aerial elevation caused panic in the Inter area with the defence resorting to dangerous play on Salihamidzic to clear the ball.
On the 14th minute a lucky re-bound for Inter favoured Vieira outside the area who shot high over the bar. Two minutes later it was Iaquinta who after a speedy bit of action put the ball dangerously into the Inter area with the defence just clearing ahead of Amauri. Three minutes later Grygera took no chances clearing into corner following a dangerous attack. From the flag the ball reached Quaresma who concluded high over the bar.
The 25th minute sees an unlucky episode lead to an Inter goal: the ball rebound off Legrottaglie and reaches Thiago Motta who finds it in his feet right in front of Buffon finding no difficulty whatsoever to deposit into the net. Juventus react immeidately and on the 28th minute Cannavaro tries to head from a corner but the ball goes high over the net.
On the 38th minute a Materazzi foul on Amauri in the area saw the referee awarding Juventus a penalty. Julio Cesar saved Iaquinta’s shot from the eleven metres. The 43rd minute however brings justice and a well deserved goal: Amauri goes round Rivas and dribbles past Cesar rolling the ball into the net for the equaliser.
The 45th minute sees Melo heading the ball following a corner but the ball is cleared by the defence. The goal was like an electric charge for Juve and Amauri who in the dying minutes of the game forced the Inter defence to resort to a corner.
The 45-minute match ended in a 1-1 draw and therefore according to the regulations of the cup required penalties to decide the result.
